The BLACK GNAT is of English origin and is actually a terrestrial imitation. We have all been on the water when huge clouds of gnats are present. This dark pattern becomes very visible to the angler in low-light conditions. Try dry dropper under these circumstance or anytime dark mayflies are present. The parachute is the dead or dying male after mating and falls back to the water.  Very effective at the later part of the hatch.
